Setting Off on Our 14-Day Adventure
After months of anticipation and thorough preparation, our 14-day family road trip officially shifted from theory to reality. We loaded up our rental car with all the gear, bags, and supplies we would need for the journey ahead. With everyone settled in, Steven took the wheel for the first leg of driving, navigating us away from Pueblo and out toward the majestic landscapes of southern Colorado.
Discovering Great Sand Dunes National Park
Our first major stop brought us face-to-face with one of North America’s most astonishing natural wonders: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
- The Landscape: Rising thousands of feet against the dramatic backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the towering, wind-sculpted sand dunes left us completely spellbound. Walking near the base, we marveled at how such a massive expanse of desert-like sand sits cozily against alpine forests and tundra. Naturally, we spent time taking plenty of photographs to capture the surreal scenery.
- The Visitor Center & Museum: We spent nearly two hours exploring the park’s visitor center and its interactive museum exhibits. Here, we gained a much deeper appreciation for the complex ecosystem, learning about the geological forces that created the tallest dunes in North America and the unique plants and animals that manage to thrive in this shifting environment.
Journey to Vallecito Reservoir and the San Juan National Forest
Energized by our desert-mountain stop, we hit the road again, driving further west toward the rugged beauty of the San Juan National Forest. Our destination for the night was the scenic Vallecito Reservoir area, nestled north near the mountains.
- Setting Up Camp: Upon arrival, we navigated the forest roads to locate our designated campsite. Unloading the car, we worked together as a family for the first time to pitch our tents, getting the hang of camp life remarkably fast.
- Evening Routine: Once our temporary home was secured, we took a peaceful, refreshing walk along the shores of the reservoir as the evening light began to soften over the water.
- Dinner and Cards: At around 7:00 PM, we cooked up a simple, comforting dinner at the campsite. Before crawling into our sleeping bags to rest up for another big day, we gathered around to play cards under the open sky.
Experiencing camping for the very first time as a family proved to be a wonderfully exciting and adventurous milestone. Tired but deeply content, we went to sleep eager for the sights and memories tomorrow will bring.
